Neon Nine is an independent creative agency of about ninety people in Sheung Wan, founded in 2012 on the proposition that Hong Kong brands were being handed campaign ideas translated from Shanghai or Singapore and were not being served by either.
The agency does brand strategy, campaign creative, social and content production, with clients across property, banking, F&B and retail. Its strongest work is in Cantonese — copywriters here write in Cantonese first, and the agency's reel is full of lines that do not survive translation, which is exactly the point.
Neon Nine has an in-house production and edit suite, which means ideas get made rather than outsourced into blandness. Agency life applies: pitch weeks are heavy, clients change their minds, and the account team absorbs it. But the agency has held onto its independence and its creative directors are the ones actually doing the work.
