Interior Design Intern (Summer Studio Placement)

About the role

Skyline Interiors is a fifteen-person design studio attached to a fit-out contractor, which means our designers see their drawings get built — sometimes eight weeks after they are drawn. It is a fast, unglamorous, very instructive way to learn interiors.

We take two interns a year for a sixteen-week placement. You will be paired with a senior designer and work on real projects: concept boards, FF&E schedules, material sourcing, Revit modelling and detail drawings. You will also come to site, to the joinery factory in Dongguan at least once, and to a client presentation.

In your final fortnight you present a small scheme of your own to the studio — usually a reception or pantry zone from a live project. The last three interns all had a job offer from someone in the industry within a month of finishing. Two of them came back to us.

What you'll do

• Produce concept boards, mood boards and material sample boards under a senior designer's direction
• Build and update Revit and SketchUp models for live commercial projects
• Maintain FF&E schedules and chase supplier samples, lead times and pricing
• Draft detail drawings for joinery and finishes, and mark up consultant drawings
• Join site walks, factory inspections and client presentations, and write up the notes
• Present a small scheme of your own to the studio at the end of the placement

What we're looking for

• Currently reading Year 2 or above of a Bachelor's degree or Higher Diploma in Interior Design, Architecture or Spatial Design
• A portfolio showing you can think in three dimensions, not just render prettily
• Working knowledge of at least two of Revit, SketchUp, AutoCAD, Rhino or Adobe Creative Suite
• Available for sixteen continuous weeks, five days a week, based in Wong Chuk Hang
• Cantonese and English good enough to take direction on site and write a supplier email

Nice to have

• Enscape, V-Ray or Twinmotion for visualisation
• Any hands-on making — model shop, joinery, set building
• A part-time or summer job that involved dealing with customers
