Lantau Commercial Bank opened its first branch on Des Voeux Road in 1954 to serve shipping clerks and textile traders who could not get an account anywhere else. Seventy years later it remains one of the few locally headquartered banks with a genuine SME franchise: roughly one in nine Hong Kong small businesses banks with Lantau in some form.
The bank runs retail, commercial, treasury and a growing wealth-management arm, with 68 branches, a mortgage book concentrated in the New Territories, and a trade-finance desk that still handles paper letters of credit alongside a new digital channel. A five-year core-banking replacement is under way, which has made technology and change-management the largest hiring area in the group.
Lantau is not a fast bank and does not claim to be. It is a stable one — average tenure is over nine years, the graduate programme has run without interruption since 1981, and internal mobility between branch network and head office is common.
