Meridian Asia Securities has been on the Hong Kong exchange floor since 1987, when it began life as a two-man brokerage placing local retail orders. It grew through the H-share boom into a mid-sized house with a research franchise that institutional clients rate well above its size — the consumer and industrials teams in particular are regularly poached from.
The firm covers around 240 listed names across Hong Kong, the mainland and Taiwan, runs an institutional sales desk in Admiralty, and executes a steady flow of small and mid-cap ECM mandates that the larger houses will not staff. Traders and analysts sit on the same floor, which is unusual and is deliberately preserved.
Meridian is at an inflection point. Commission compression has forced a hard look at the retail channel while the research and corporate-access business grows, and the firm is investing in a systematic execution stack for the first time. Expect a house that is smaller, more specialised and more technical in three years than it is today.
