Lion Rock Outfitters started in 2005 as a single shop in Lai Chi Kok selling imported trail gear to a small community of local hikers. The founders quickly discovered that European technical clothing was designed for cold, dry mountains and performed badly on a Hong Kong ridge in June, so they started making their own.
The company now designs and sells its own range of packs, trail apparel and footwear alongside carefully chosen imports, through six shops, a strong online channel and a growing wholesale book in Taiwan and Japan. Everything is tested on local trails by staff before it ships — the product team's test log includes MacLehose section times.
There are around 300 people between retail, product, warehouse and head office. The culture is exactly what you would expect: staff hike together, the shops close early on race days, and product feedback from a Saturday shift genuinely reaches the design team on Monday.
