PearlRun Trading has worked out of the same Sheung Wan building since 1976, when the founder started buying dried seafood and rice from Thai suppliers and selling into Kowloon wholesalers. The dried-goods business still exists, but the bulk of the volume today is edible oils, pulses and animal feed moving from Southeast Asia and South America into Guangdong.
The company is a classic Hong Kong trading house: thin margins, heavy on documentation, and entirely dependent on relationships that took decades to build. Traders manage their own book with real authority, and the credit and shipping teams sit two desks away rather than in another time zone. Letters of credit, inspection disputes and freight rates are the daily texture of the job.
The next generation of the founding family took over in 2021 and is dragging the operation onto a proper CTRM platform, which has created openings for people who understand both physical trade and data. It is not glamorous work and the office is not a startup — but the P&L is real and you will learn how goods actually move.
