About the role
This is a six-month placement running from January to June 2027, designed for penultimate-year undergraduates on an industrial attachment. It is not a rotation through meeting rooms. You are given a seat in the Data & Insights team, a laptop, warehouse access, and a project with a named owner who wants it finished.
Past placement projects have included a self-service capacity dashboard the reliability team still uses, an entity-resolution job for customer contacts, and a data quality monitor that now runs nightly. Two of the last four interns came back after graduation.
You will be supported by an analytics engineer as your day-to-day mentor and will present your work to the engineering group in your final fortnight.
What you'll do
- Build and test dbt models in the warehouse alongside the analytics engineering team.
- Write SQL for real analysis requests from the reliability and commercial teams — and explain the caveats in your answers.
- Own one placement project end to end, from problem statement to something running in production.
- Add data quality tests to the pipelines you touch, so the next person inherits something trustworthy.
- Join the team's stand-ups, planning and code review as a full participant.
- Present your project to the engineering group before you finish.
What we're looking for
- Currently studying toward a bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, statistics, engineering or a related field.
- Available full time for the whole placement, 5 January to 26 June 2027.
- Working SQL — you will be given a short exercise, and it is genuinely short.
- Some Python, and enough curiosity to read a query plan when a job is slow.
- The right to work in Hong Kong for the placement period; university placement paperwork supported.
Nice to have
- Coursework or projects using dbt, Airflow or a cloud warehouse.
- Any experience presenting analysis to people who did not do the analysis.
- Interest in infrastructure and how large systems actually behave.
What you get
- Paid placement with a named mentor and a real project
- MPF and medical cover for the placement period
- Shuttle bus from University station
- Full access to the internal training library and certification material
- Priority consideration for the graduate programme cohort after you graduate
