UX Researcher

About the role

Nimbus Labs builds speech and document understanding for Cantonese and Traditional Chinese, and our users are not technologists. They are a paralegal working through a bundle at eleven at night, a ward clerk dictating handover notes in code-switched Cantonese and English, and a district office worker who has been given a tool nobody asked them about.

This twelve-month contract is funded by a deployment programme with three institutional customers, and it exists because our evaluation discipline on model accuracy is far ahead of our discipline on whether the product is usable at all. We would like that gap closed with evidence rather than opinions.

You would work with two product leads, the speech research team and a designer, and you would spend a meaningful share of your week outside the office — in chambers, on wards and in district offices, watching people work.

What you'll do

• Plan and run field research with legal, clinical and public-sector users, conducted primarily in Cantonese.
• Run usability sessions on speech and document tools where the failure modes are linguistic as often as they are interface problems.
• Build and maintain a research repository the whole company can search, rather than a folder of decks nobody opens.
• Turn findings into prioritised, specific recommendations, and follow them through to whether anything changed.
• Work with the research scientists to design evaluation sets that reflect how people actually speak, including code-switching.
• Handle participant data under the PDPO with the care the settings demand — some of this is medical and legal material.

What we're looking for

• Four or more years of applied UX or product research, with fieldwork you personally ran.
• Native Cantonese, including the confidence to run a session with a sixty-year-old clerk who is nervous about being recorded.
• Fluency in mixed-methods practice — you know when a survey is the wrong instrument.
• Business English for written reporting; the company documents in English.
• Right to work in Hong Kong for the full contract term.

Nice to have

• Research experience in legal, healthcare or government settings.
• Familiarity with speech interfaces or AI product evaluation.
• Conversational Mandarin for participants who prefer it.
