Nimbus Labs was spun out of a university lab in 2018 to solve a problem the big model providers kept deprioritising: Cantonese. Written Cantonese, code-switched Cantonese-English office speech, and the messy traditional-Chinese documents that every Hong Kong business actually runs on.
The company builds speech recognition, document understanding and retrieval products used by law firms, hospitals and government departments who cannot send their data overseas. Everything runs on customer infrastructure or in a Hong Kong region, which shapes the entire engineering approach — small efficient models, careful evaluation, and no hand-waving about accuracy.
It remains a research-flavoured company of about ninety people in Cyberport. Papers get published, evaluation sets are open-sourced, and Friday afternoons are protected for exploratory work. The founders have been explicit that they would rather stay at this size and be excellent than raise a round to triple headcount.
